Rebuilding with Straw Bale in Earthquake Affected Pakistan — Berkeley architect Martin Hammer recently returned from Pakistan where he has been working to bring straw bale and other sustainable building practices to the mountainous region devastated by the 2005 earthquake, which was responsible for over 80,000 deaths, and left millions without permanent shelter. He'll give us an update on the work he presented last year, as well as provide details about straw bale construction. Straw bale construction is earthquake resistant, energy and resource efficient, and an affordable solution to northern Pakistan's enormous reconstruction needs. Martin Hammer has been involved with the design, engineering, and construction of straw bale buildings since 1995, and is the lead author of the proposed straw bale building code for the State of California. Home Graywater Systems Slideshow & Tour — Learn about the permitted greywater system at the Ecohouse. This system is the first residential constructed wetland/greywater system in the State of California and the first greywater system in Berkeley to be permitted. We will discuss the principles and process of safely irrigating with shower, bathroom sink, and laundry waste water. Eco-Art Exhibit: Heart of the Matter — The City of Berkeley is proud to present an exhibition of work created by students in Laney College's EcoArt Matters class, with instructor Andrée Singer Thompson. At a time when our environment is in crisis, it is imperative that we all become better informed about the conditions that threaten life on this planet and survival of the many species with whom we co-exist. The pieces in this show were created in response to urgent environmental and community issues. Among the many interesting works exhibited: a mural incorporating ceramic figures which addresses the problem of air pollution in Oakland's poorer communities; several pieces addressing disappearing wildlife and habitat; a performance video about the importance of recycling; a solar-powered bird habitat; an innovative ceramic toilet seat with a urine funnel designed to provide nitrogen for the garden; and an exercise bicycle that powers lights, a fountain and a fan. All the works are accompanied by research data and information about how we can take individual responsibility for making our world a better place to live for us all. Class: Greywater, Composting Toilets, Healthy/Toxic Environments — Join Laura Allen of Greywater Guerrillas and Babak Tondre of the Berkeley EcoHouse for a 6-week class through the SF Institute of Architecture and the Berkeley Institute for Ecological Design: Greywater, Composting Toilets, Healthy/Toxic Environments. Buildings can recycle "used" water, process sewage, and instead of being the worst polluters, can be turned around to eliminate toxic waste, improve the environment and enhance health. Class: Simplify Your Life — After an introductory session, the following four sessions will each be devoted to specific topics. Financial management will be discussed the second session, and decluttering the third session. Other possible topics, depending on what the class prefers, are alternative/small homes, reducing expenses, opting out of the consumer trap, alternatives to buying from corporations, buying and eating locally, and researching what other people have done to simplify. Art Exhibit: Americans Who Tell the Truth — Portraits by Maine artist, Robert Shetterly. This exhibition features 30 of the 68 portraits Shetterly painted of American truth tellers including images of Paul Robeson, Harriet Tubman, and W.E.B. DuBois. Amongst Shetterly's collection are local Bay Area truth tellers including Lateefah Simmons, James Bell, Daniel Ellsberg, Eva Patterson, and Cesar Chavez. Fundraiser: Oakland Independent Film "Firstborn" — Local independent production company, Scorpio Rising Productions will have its first fundraiser for the narrative film, "Firstborn". Fundraiser will be hosted by Greg Bridges of KPFA and KCSM, we will preview a scene from the film, and will have the legendary jazz musician Eddie Gale playing an inspiring set. The film's story is about spiritually gifted 15 year-old Daja Wilson, who has been struggling to hold her family together since the tragic death of her songstress mother. Despite her family's history of depression, abuse and lost dreams, she must help them remember the wealth of generosity, love and creativity still within their reach. The film focuses on a family healing after the trauma of losing a loved one to cancer—relearning to engage one another after their painful coping has caused bitter distance between them. Writer/Director Tiffany Golden says, "It is my belief that these and other debilitating emotional pains are healable—when we all stand up as our true, divine selves. Firstborn is my fearless attempt to tackle both tough and taboo issues through a lens of justice and healing. My aspiration is that people are able to recognize themselves and their pain in this film and walk away with the hope and desire to heal." The film will be shot in Oakland, during the summer of 2008. Planning Meeting to Stop the "Bombplex" — The Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration has released new plans to modernize and "revitalize" the U.S. nuclear weapons research and production complex at 8 locations across the country, including the Bay Area's Livermore Lab. The DOE calls the plan, "Complex Transformation." We call it "Bombplex." Regional Meeting: Transportation and Land Use Coalition (TALC) — What matters more if you want to reduce emissions: what kinds of cars people own or how many miles they drive? Todd Litman, the well-known sustainable transportation policy researcher, will talk about how better fuel efficiency tends to stimulate more driving and why strategies to reduce how much people drive tend to be overlooked by policymakers. Rebuilding with Straw Bale in Earthquake Affected Pakistan — Berkeley architect Martin Hammer recently returned from Pakistan where he has been working to bring straw bale and other sustainable building practices to the mountainous region devastated by the 2005 earthquake, which was responsible for over 80,000 deaths, and left millions without permanent shelter. He'll give us an update on the work he presented last year, as well as provide details about straw bale construction. Straw bale construction is earthquake resistant, energy and resource efficient, and an affordable solution to northern Pakistan's enormous reconstruction needs. Martin Hammer has been involved with the design, engineering, and construction of straw bale buildings since 1995, and is the lead author of the proposed straw bale building code for the State of California. SF Solidarity Rally for "Freightliner Five" — "Freightliner Five" Solidarity Tour Solidarity Rally For UAW 3520 "Freightliner Five" Fired Workers. Five fired union leaders of the UAW Cleveland, North Carolina Freightliner truck plant are fighting to get their jobs back. This integrated union leadership was standing up for decent health and safety conditions and benefits. This meeting is also inviting other workers in struggle to participate and speak about their struggle. In April 2007, UAW 3520 workers at the Cleveland, North Carolina Freightliner truck plant went on strike over health and safety and other conditions and benefits. In retaliation, the Daimler Benz owned company fired 5 strike leaders. They are known as the Freightliner Five and have been fighting for their jobs back for nearly a year. This struggle is not just about the Freightliner workers but union organizing throughout the South. If Freightliner can get away with this illegal firing, other workers will think twice about joining a union. Planning Meeting to Stop the "Bombplex" — The Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration has released new plans to modernize and "revitalize" the U.S. nuclear weapons research and production complex at 8 locations across the country, including the Bay Area's Livermore Lab. The DOE calls the plan, "Complex Transformation." We call it "Bombplex." Volunteer: Late Winter Planting at San Francisquito Creek — We are in the final days of planting season. Help plant natives like tufted hairgrass and blue elderberry along the paths at the Baylands. Other projects include removing non-native vegetation and site monitoring. This unique wetland habitat was saved from development in the 1950s and is now home to many native species, including shorebirds and anadromous fish such as steelhead trout. Volunteer: Native Planting at Eden Landing — In partnership with the California Department of Fish and Game. Restoring this former salt pond will increase habitat for threatened and endangered waterfowl, shorebirds and fish, and provide recreation opportunities. Help restore this important habitat area.
